Hi, Cliff:

Thank you for responding.  I discovered your awesome bagels @ Starbucks.  From what you and John, your sales manager have indicated, the only retails outlets nearby are Starbucks and Barnes and Noble.  John also mentioned Sysco but, to my knowledge, they sell only to restaurants or school districts not individuals.  So that leaves me online purchases, which works fine.  Since you’re in the “bagel capitol” of the world (New York J) and I’m in California, how long would an order take to ship that distance to one mere mortal of a person who thinks you have the best bagels on the planet?

You are welcome.  I was the one who spearheaded bringing in your product.  We need to sell the best and I have never eaten a better bagel.  I am easy coast Jew and take my bagels very seriously.  Your product is amazing.  In fact I just had one.  I am the DSM in Park City and we have tremendous opportunity with your product.  In fact, Stein Erikson Lodge which is a 5 star ski lodge is going to be using your bagels this winter.  They want to use your multigrain, sesame, plain and cinnamon raisin in the sliced version.  100 cases a week in the winter.

Subject: Too far from the bagels

Aloha from Hawaii;

Ten years ago I decided to move to the most remote place in Hawaii knowing full well that I may never eat a real bagel again. And I missed them very much.  I'd buy the bread rings offered at the local grocery store but only dreamed of eating the real thing. I even considered opening a bagel store and learning the craft. Then about three months ago a small wholesale outlet "Cost -U- Less" suddenly had your bagels and in asiago cheese too. I squeezed them and wow. I was convinced at once. I purchased ten bags that day and stocked my freezer.  To my disappointment they have not received a new shipment and it has been about two weeks sence I ran out and I'm jonesing for them.  I check with them weekly and the owner assures me they are on order.  So having saved an empty bag I decided to look you up on the web. I congratulate you on a great product. The only way to get better is to walk into the bakery. But I'm afraid that the cost to ship me a case would be too high. I paid close to $5 per bag. So if I wanted a box/case (8) retail six pack bags 1/2 & 1/2 asiago cheese and sun dried tomato, what would it cost total shipped to zip code 96749.

From: K Hackett Sent: Friday, August 26, 2011 12:36 PM To: Cliff Subject: RE: Bagel Shipping Charges

Cliff,

My apologies for sending my email before thoroughly exploring your site.  I had been to several of your competitors' websites & none of them showed the shipping charges.  I had to email them to get that information.  In looking at your "Bagels" page (
http://www.justbagels.com/sales/buy_bagels_online.html), I thought that it was the page where you gave information about online ordering.  (Yes, at first I missed the huge "Click Here For Secure Online Retail Ordering" link.)  It was only after I'd emailed you that I found your actual ordering pages, which have the method of calculating the shipping charges.

Your shipping charges are VERY much lower than your competitors'.  I don't know why there's such a huge difference when most that I checked, if not all, state that they only charge what the carriers charge (one quoted around $65-70 to ship two dozen bagels!).  Their 2-day shipping wasn't much better.  When it's time for me to order, I will certainly come back to you!

Which brings me to a different question:  It is for a birthday gift for my husband that I will be ordering the bagels.  His birthday is on Tuesday, September 20th.  Our mail does not go to our house - the Post Office doesn't deliver this far out - but instead to a package shipping business in the nearest town, which is closed on Saturdays & Sundays.  Your site states that "Orders placed on Friday will not ship until Monday for Tuesday delivery".  I'd like to have the bagels arrive on Monday, the day before my husband's birthday, as I will not be able to get into town to pick up the mail on his birthday, Tuesday.

So my question is:  As orders placed on Friday will be delivered on Monday for Tuesday delivery, would you suggest that I place the order on Thursday, making it a likelier possiblity that the bagels will arrive on Monday?  I will do whatever you suggest.  And, because of the desired Monday delivery, if you think that it would be better to place the order by phone instead of online, I will do that, too.

Thanks so much for your patience and, again, I do apologize for requesting information that was already available on your superior website.

Bethe

Hi Dominique,

Well, our surprise was an unqualified success!  My husband will open his presents when he gets home from work tonight, but I thought that it would be best to give him your bagels this morning before he had breakfast.  He wasn't expecting this at all, and he was just delighted.  I told him why I'd left the box intact, and he was really impressed with your personal attention.  Then he opened the box & found that you'd put in that nice birthday greeting - complete with bow!  Over & above, Dominique, over & above :)

Of course, he immediately sliced one & toasted it.  It was pronounced a genuine treat!  I know he'll never again be happy just getting by with the bagels he can get here in McAlester ;]

Thanks again for everything.  You can be sure that we'll both highly recommend "Just Bagels"!

Hi Andy;

I just had to tell you….

how much fun you make the job. You are there at every food show, busting your butt with a smile upon your face and jokes ripping out of your mouth!! All kidding aside, no other manufacturer works as hard as you do. As your broker rep, we are responsible for setting up and breaking down, ordering the samples, hauling the oven and getting the accoutrements (cream cheese). But you Andy, you set up with your burlap table cloth, dropping your seeds all over. You heave that oven onto the table and even bring your own oven mitts, your own latex gloves!! You bake and give samples…it’s your booth, your show, you know the customers…you are out there selling, bringing them in and showing them, what a true New York bagel is.

There isn’t a manufacturer that I would rather work with and look forward to working with, not because you do it, but because you have so much passion for it. Every time, you teach me something new; and that passion rubs off onto me!!

Thanks Andy for always being you and making the dreaded food show so much more fun!

I just wanted to put in a word about a customer call I made today with Andy Russo from Just Bagels. In 10 minutes I learned more about bagels than I ever knew. The end result was a placement of at least 8 new line items, a merchandising rack for the C-Store, and the removal of the Bagel King from servicing the property. The Chef will begin ordering the Just Bagel items on his next delivery.
Andy was great and he made the selling easy.

I'm originally from New York and grew up on real old fashion bagels in the 50s and 60s. These are even better than the ones I had way back then.

Rob - David, if you like bagels you have to check these out...

David NYC - I already have. They are baked across the street from the plant where they USED to make the Sabrett natural casing franks and the onion sauce. I once passed there and the aroma of the bagel plant combined with the hot dog plant had me salivating. There are a number of places in NYC that sell their bagels fresh, and they are the best kind.

They have a few videos shot inside their plant on their website:

This is a message that was sent to me on my BagelLover.com website

After many years of literally going through withdrawel trying to find a bagel like the ones I ate in my childhood, I came across this Starbucks in one of my travels that had the very best bagel I ever tasted. Now I've had bagels in the Starbucks in my area and it wasn't the same.

I had to do some investigating to prove to myself that I knew a real old fashion NY bagel when I ate one. After some arm twisting and many phone calls I found out that some, but not all of the Starbucks get their bagels from a Bronx New York company (Just Bagels) I also found out that the starbucks that do carry this bagel, do great with it.

The first thing I did was check the internet to see if they had a website and they did but didn't sell retail, I was devastated, here I finally found the bagel I had been looking for but couldn't buy it.

After a few years of contacting Just Bagels via email, and reading all the tributes on their website from people like myself wanting to buy from them, (whalla) they finally did it, I can now buy their delicious old fashion New York bagel directly from their website and I'm now in bagel heaven, it really is the best, you have to eat one to believe it...

Hi Cliff, Love the bagels!  I get them at my local Whole Foods every week.  However, they don't carry a few I'm interested in, so I have a few questions. How much are a dozen bagels ordered from you, including shipping to Virginia? Do you have nutritional facts and ingredient lists for your bagels? Thanks so much Cliff, Taylor (aka-bagel lover)

Dear Cliff:
I went to get my usual stack of frozen Just Bagels from the nearby Starbucks, and they informed me they are switching to another provider.   I didn't know there WAS another provider....Just Bagels are THE BEST, and anything else Starbucks carries will be THE LESS.
My question is, where may I buy your bagels, I like a frozen stack or two to keep at home, and more if company is coming.    Starbucks' manager always obliged me with whatever order I gave him.

I know you also make Ray's Bagels, but no one in Columbus OH carries them, to my knowledge.
Any help you can give me will be a very big help.
wish I could order the bagels and sticks directly from you, but know you can't bother with individual orders.
Thanks, and all best wishes to you and your great bagel company!

John, The bagels were amazing. You are the clear winner. I had tried samples from A&S and H&H. A&S were totally unprofessional and the bagels were not that good. H&H great operation but the taste and texture were not what we are looking for. Your bagels were the consumate NY bagel flavor profile. Nice and crispy outside with a chewy center. I am definately going with your products. Your customer service has been far ahead of everyone else also. You actually followed up and were very quick to respond to my requests. What other Bialy flavors do you have besides onion? Would it be possible to get some samples of bagel stix and your pumpernickle bagels? We need to get our menu nailed down for submission to the health dept and need to finalize our product mix. Thanks Don Merritt Blackstone Coffee Co

Hi Cliff,

You guys should so consider possibly distributing your products in the Chicagoland area through a store like Trader Joes. I am in love with your Multigrain/Energy bagels and am sure that they would sell well.

Do you have any stores in Chicago that sell our bagels?

Thanks

Hi Cliff,
It's me, again. Just checking to ask if I can assume my delicious multigrain bagels are not sold in my area. My son bought a locally made multigrain bagel and it was good, but too salty, and tasted very much like a pretzel. Interesting, but it didn't fill me up and leave me wonderfully satisfied like your bagel does. Hoping Just Bagels will be sold around here soon.
                                                        Sincerely, Claudia

My doctor told me I shouldn't eat bagels, for a variety of reasons, (I am overweight) but I like that my blood sugar is good and I feel full after such a breakfast.
Stores in my area and within a 20 mile radius include Ralphs, Vons, Pavilions, Trader Joes, Mother's, and Albertsons, plus a few other specialty markets frequented by my son. Please tell me that someplace here carries your wonderful product.

Good morning from Sunny Puerto Rico!!!!!

I am sending you this note because I am simply in love with your bagels.

I have been researching and trying to figure out if there is someone (besides Starbucks) selling them here but unfortunately there is not.

I wanted to purchase several packs online but it seems like you do not ship outside the NY area.

I was wondering if you could do an exception and mail them to me via Priority Mail.  I assume full responsibility if they do not reach me fresh or on time.  Shipping to PR is the same as within any other US State.

I am interested in purchasing four (4) bags of the 6 pack Multi-grain Energy bagels.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Cordially,

Hi Cliff,

Twice now since I have finished the bagels you so generously sent me I've been to Starbucks on George Washington Highway in the Lincoln Mall Plaza in Lincoln, Rhode Island and they've been sold out. I've given up. I asked and one of the employees said they only put out 6. SIX bagels in a coffee shop? SIX of the most delicious bagels on earth...in a coffee shop???....they're probably gone before I wake up!  I don't get it.

I'm sorry but your bagels are worthy of a heck a lot more than that.  I understand that Starbucks doesn't want to end up tossing them but we're talking about PHENOMENAL bagels here.

Cliff.....I'm probably as passionate about eating your multigrain bagels as you are making them!  They're delicious! Not too salty...not too sweet....juuuuuuuuuuuuuust right!

Your life is too short to live another day without a multigrain Just Bagel friend,

Hi Cliff, I am sitting here this glorious Saturday morning eating one of the multigrain energy bagels you sent me and I savoring every single bite! Within the past 1-1/2 years I've lost 40 pounds the hard way.....through changing my diet and by going to the gym. I've got 20 pounds left to go and WILL do it. The beautiful part about eating this bagel....I DON'T FEEL GUILTY!!!!! I have incorporated it into my eating plan. I toast 1/2 (sometimes whole), put peanut butter on it, drink a large glass of water, go to the gym and feel great!  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start selling these bagels online soon. I only have a couple bagels left and really don't want to drive around town looking for them at Starbucks especially when I already know they'll most likely be sold out : (  I think if you market them as energy bagels or even make some in the form of a bar or rectangular shaped bagel (very appealing to women as they may not want to eat the entire bagel)....you would attract an even larger market and could make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. They're absolutely delicious! Food for thought : )

Jonathan & Cliff -
FABULOUS bagels!  My favorite has always been blueberry and yours, WOW, are absolutely wonderful!  I opened the box, the smell.....  I opened the bag and quickly cut into one to have everyone on staff sample one (I ate 1/2 of one & Bob ate a whole one).  I actually had to lick the blueberry off my fingers!  They ALL agreed they taste like BLUEBERRY!  What did I expect though?  I grew up in Ohio and we grew some wonderful blueberries and I only imagine NY is the same.
Bob is currently on his way to our customer with bagels in hand, along with some cream cheese samples I put together.  Bob had actually purchased some of the blueberry from some of our local competition (Einstein Bagels & Panera) and agreed that yours blows theirs out of the water! (pun intended.  water bagels. ;)
Also, can you confirm the minimum order?  Is it possible to get less than 3 pallets?  We keep our freezer at 0, will this be an optimal temp?  What are the baking instructions for par-baked, 5 min @ 450-500?
Thank you again for all of your help!  I will let you know when I know what their decision is.

Cliff,

I wanted to confirm the information that I got is correct that your company provides bagels to the Ashbrook Commons Starbucks in Ashburn, Virginia.  I understand this request may be random but my wife loves the multigrain bagel at the Starbucks and the store now seems to always have run out when she goes there.
Her obsession for the multigrain bagel began shortly after our third child was born and I brought my wife a bagel and coffee at the hospital.  The store was out of plain bagels (her normal order) and I went ahead and ordered her a multigrain bagel hoping she would be happy with it.  Her initial disappointment at the lack of a plain bagel was reversed after she ate the multigrain bagel.  She absolutely loved it.  Since then, she only orders the multigrain bagel and is downtrodden if the store is out.
If you do indeed provide bagels for the Starbucks, I would love to order some to keep in stock at home, if possible.
Please let me know if you do indeed ship bagels to the Ashbrook Commons Starbucks and if so, how I can purchase some of your multigrain bagels.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my email. Jon

Hi Cliff, I received the samples they were great. Susan with Deiorios tried to get Roma Foods on board with their/your product but they don't' deliver to my area. I've tried everyone's par baked bagels: A&S, H&H... Just Bagels is the best. I need them for my shop. Is there anyone else or another way to get them to Bedford, Va 24523? I need approximately 750 bagels per week. Thanks, Mike Pizza

Hi there,
I realized that your French Toast Bagels are sold at Starbucks around here in Manhattan and I just love those bagels! I saw your link to freshdirect but they do not appear to have the French Toast flavor for sale. How can I buy some of these for my freezer? I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out with this. Thanks! Sincerely, Kerry

I recently moved from the Bronx to FL in April and miss my Just Bagels. I just went down to Nature’s Table in my office building and saw Just Bagels – I couldn’t believe it. I had the French Toast which others have been raving about and I must say – it was just delicious!
Do you ship to individuals or just corporations? I would love to see a price list/order form. Look forward to hearing from you soon!

I just read some of your testimonials and I could have written some of them myself. I do not live in the New York area, have never seen a Starbucks in my city that even sells a bagel(except in Barnes and Noble) and would like to know if they are available for purchase, directly. I guess they would lose some of their "out of the oven flavor" but I did purchase some from a local coffee house and they are the best. I look forward to your reply. Thanks bgolomb@verizon.net

Dear Cliff:

My Denver family just left, and your generous-sized box of bagels arrived yesterday during the middle of their visit, mercifully saving us from the Lender's!     All I can say is, they agreed they never had a better bagel.

I am going to write you a snail-mail letter as soon as I clear up from the visit.    But, I can't wait to hear,

yes or no, if you ship boxes of a dozen or two bagels/bialys/sticks to individuals.   I have about six or eight recipients I would send to if you do small orders to non-commercial-customers.    Overnight or two day would be fine.

If you do ship, I would fax the list to you and include charge card #, or would send a check if you prefer,

or even one of my 20 grandchildren.....I might not miss just one of 'em.

You are a truly savvy businessman, and the good will you have generated from me alone must be emanating in waves up there in Bronx, New Yawk.    I don't know how to thank you.

Everyone I have bragged to about your bagels to, is waiting with baited breath to see if they are going to partake of the Bagels Ain't Bagels Unless They're JUST BAGELS which I told them I would hope to send them.

Would there be a distributor in the Columbus area from whom I could purchase, if you don't do residential shipments?    Anyway, anyhow, anywhere, lead me to where I can get Just Bagels!

Much appreciation from Esther

Subject: WOW, what a bagel !

Dear Just Bagels: I had my first Starbucks experience last week. My friend insisted on taking me, we had coffee and she got a bagel, gave me half with cream cheese. I said, no, no, I don't want any, I had breakfast. She insisted. Well, I was hooked from that first bite! I kept breaking small pieces off the half she gave me, and finished it all, and with cream cheese. I prevailed upon Starbucks twice now to sell me your bagels from their freezer. Yes, the OH-YOU kosher certification made it perfect, and all of my family can enjoy Just Bagels. My husband was third generation in a hand-operation bakery here in Columbus, Ohio, that made the best cissel rye, pumpernickel and BAGELS and more that I have ever had anywhere. When he closed the bakery in 1970 due to health problems and trouble getting the European bakers, we kept one bagel in the freezer for a souvenir. When I saw your Just Bagels and tasted it, it was like a revelation! It is the first time I have ever had a bagel that approaches the old Schwartz Bakery bagel of yore. The size, the beautiful golden, glossy top crust, and the soft, tasty innards........to me, Just Bagels is what a bagel SHOULD BE. And you don't have to break your jaw chewing...... They are PERFECT. I am very excited about "discovering" them. I'd like to send them to my family in Denver, Baltimore and Teaneck NJ, and want to know if you ship them. I hope so. If not, I will have to prevail upon my local Starbucks in Bexley to please order several dozen for me to pick up. You have the right formula, I will spread the word about you here in Columbus, Ohio, so if you see business booming here, you'll know I'm on the Just Bagels Publicity Tour ! All best wishes, thanks for your superior, delicious bagels. Esther

Cliff;   You bet, the moment I opened the box and the smell wafted across the hall, David Green, our CEO was in to look at them.   Thom Pannullo, our COO, and I toasted a couple of them up and I had two, with sliced turkey, honey nut cream cheese and roasted tomato for lunch.   So, we all really appreciated the quality of your product; now, how do we start talking about price?   I am traveling the rest of this week so I¹m going to be limited to e-mail.   Take care, Paul

Hi, I was in the states for a very short business trip, and I grabbed a Bagel just before I flew back home. It was one of yours and I thought it was the best bagel ever! I was wondering if you sell to Canadian customers or if you could ship a small quantity directly to me. I would pay the shipping, (we could mark the box as samples or gift to avoid duties problems). I would like to have a few 6 packs (I guess it is packs of 6 bagels??? Could I get packs of 6). Maybe 3 of each; Sesame, Plain, Energy/Multigrain, Sun Dried Tomato, Blueberry, Whole wheat, Cinnamon Raisin, Poppy, Pumpernickel.
I will froze it and take it out the freezer when I need some. I think it’s the best way for me to have good bagels. Unfortunately, my freezer would not contain more than these packs. I hope you can arrange some shipment for me. I really want to have your bagels. I can’t find any Bagels as good as yours here. By the way, I’m in the greater Montreal area, Canada.
Thank You Very Much
Guillaume

Subj: missing the good stuff

I'm at this moment watching the Food Network show The Secet Life of...   So far, only Just Bagels reminds me of what a bagel is SUPPOSED to be!   The last time I had a decent bagel was on a business trip to CT six years ago. It was at an airport shop, so it may have beenone of yours. Prior to that, I had met a man here in St Cloud MN who have the only bagel shop. Tons of business because they were made like Just Bagels makes 'em! He did use a small bagel making machine at times, but he showed me the proofing, boiling, and baking on the cornstarch processes.   From him I first learned the term "bread with a hole it".   They he was taken out of business when a Panera Bread opened across the highway.     Oh sure, we have a few frachised bagel restaurants in Minnesota, but seeing the Food Network segment on Just Bagels reminded me that a NY area bagel can't be duplicated.   Unfortunately, in the past few years, I've found I have MS and I'm not doing well enough for leisure travel any longer. And by this time in the letter I am typing with Justa Couple Fingers! (hand cramp and muscle failure)   I need to stop now, but thanks for reminding me of the tasiest bagel experience I'd had. Maybe one day Just Bagels will locate Just One bagel bakery nearby and I'll travel often to enjoy!   Mark

Good Afternoon Cliff,
I am in the process of opening an ice creamery & coffee house in Sarasota, FL.  My partner Stephen & I tried your bagels at the food show in Orlando.  We were both impressed and thought your bagels were the best we have had in a very long time, so we of course would like to carry your bagels in our store.  We are still in the process of doing the build out, but should be open before Thanksgiving.

I called and left a message on Monday.  I am anxious to get my vendors lined up, so when you have a chance, please email or call me at your earliest convenience. I look forward to speaking with you.  Thank you.

Aloha Cliff! I just spoke with you this morning. I have to say that I really enjoyed eating the 2 lonely bagels my girlfriend left at my home. In the meantime however, I would be blessed to be able to purchase some from you. If this becomes a possibility, please let me know ! ! !

Cliff,

I tried your product at the Orlando food show and thought they were outstanding. I would like some samples for my Director and Director of Operations to try. We run dining services at the University of Central Florida. We have three retail outlets that are interested in selling a quality bagel. Please get back to me about this inquiry. Thank you.

I'm an old fashion traveling salesman from NY that loves his morning bagel with a smear. I always wondered if there were any national bagel specialty bakery/coffee shop chains that serve what a bagel afficianado would consider a real New York bagel, or are such shops confined to ethnic mom-and-pop operations? Well I found one and it's Starbucks!

I love bagels, but I use to agree with the prevailing notion that it's hard  to get a good one outside of New York. What distinguishes a New York bagel from the wannabes? The ingredients? Methods of preparation? The  skills and ethnic background of the bakers (i.e., must they have trained under Jewish mothers who made them for their families back in  the old country? well whatever the reason I found the best bagel I ever tasted in Florida and it's made by Just Bagels.

Taster's Choice panelists claimed to be open-minded about store-bought bagels. They prefer the morning offering at the local bagel shop, as do I, but they will reach for a substitute in a pinch. The only rule: Bagels have to be really fresh to be good.
We sampled 10 bagels from local grocery stores - two were from the freezer section and warmed in the oven or microwave as directed by the manufacturer.
Judges liked Ray's frozen bagels $2.50 for a bag of six from Publix. They gave these 70 out of a possible 100 points. Three of the four panelists said they would buy the Ray's brand.
Panelists liked the chewy texture of the bagels, the slightly sweet taste and the light brown color.
"They are better than a regular bagel," said one.
Another judge said, "These look like they came right out of the oven fresh."
Only one judge complained that the Ray's bagels weren't presliced.

Just Bagels Deli
Ahhhhh Bagels!
They arent open as often as i hoped but man its worth it. These Bagels are so fresh and rich that you could eat 3 and wish your stomach could fit one more. They arent a store or deli either as it says here. It's more like a stand inside a store. You tell the worker what you want and you get it freshly made in a matter of minutes. Magnicifo! is one word not to small to describe what there bagels taste like.

I'm from Queens New York and there is just a different taste and quality to a NY bagel. It's very hard to describe. I went to CA and visited a place which touts "New York bagels" but they sure didn't taste anything like real NY bagels. I think NY bagels have a unique taste, distinctive and strong. It *could* be the water -- I've heard that NY pizza is the same way -- it's very hard to find decent NY pizza anywhere but NY. After 5 years of searching I finally found one place that sells what I'm looking for, bagels made by Just bagels in NY. I guess their shipped frozen, who cares, the best I ever had.

Ok, maybe I'm not qualified to review bagels, but I feel like I am obligated to review Just Bagels My brother and everyone in Reading are obsessed with the ones I bring them a few times a year. Reason #1: When I say everyone back home loves these bagels, I am not lying, they can't get enough of them, when I do come home their hands are out, god forbid I didn't have any with me. Reason #2: The NY bagel claim is true and the last thing I want to do is open up this debate.  I'm sure Just Bagels will acknowledge that it does make New York bagels the old fashion way, just like they claim to do.
At some places these bagels are freshly made in front of the customers in huge ovens. But going on the testimonials of others who rave about their bagels, I'm going to boldly state that Just Bagels are probably the best around Then again, what do I know, I just eat them and love them.

Ever have one of those days when you're hungry, but nothing really appeals to you? So you sit around listless, waiting for divine inspiration, as your stomach growls louder and louder... Fortunately, for situations like these, I can always be enticed to eat a bagel by Just Bagels. Just Bagels is a company out of the Bronx, and the Bronx is exactly where you'd expect folks who know how to make a good bagel. The company ships the bagels frozen to grocers and restaurants alike who then thaw them and put them out with the daily bakery. I buy my four-pack of Just Bagels at the Jenifer St. Market for $2.99. They come in a variety of flavors, such as egg, everything, cinnamon and raisin, blueberry, sesame, and whole wheat, but I tend to go for the plain bagels, which I always eat with peanut butter. Indie Coffee on Regent St. also sells the tasty circular goodness. I suppose other places around town do, too, but I haven't taken a survey. Why do I like Just Bagels? Well, because they're your basic hearty bagel, and not drizzled in this or that nonsense. They also taste excellent plain and untoasted, which is something that can not be said for many bagels that will remain nameless. I also like eating stuff that makes me feel like a "tough guy," and how could you feel like anything but a "tough guy" eating a bagel from the Bronx? Question for bagel eaters out there. What's with the frosting?!!! I can't believe how many people I've witnessed applying cream cheese in proportions so that you'd think they there were frosting a cake. That's a heck of a lot of extra fat and calories folks, and it still tastes pretty good with only a smidge. Just saying.

I just experienced the following epiphany (with the help of a knowledgeable friend): could the alleged (!) superiority of the New York bagel have something to do with kosher methods/ingredients? The best bagel I ever had was made by Just Bagels and that is a Kosher bagel.

I grew up in NYC, the bagel capital of the world. More to the point, I grew up in Brooklyn, the bagel capital of NY. In fact, I lived not far from Kings Highway which is well known as -- you guessed it -- the bagel capital of Brooklyn. The odd thing is, now that I live upstate, I have found a bagel every bit as good as the ones I grew up with. It's made by Just Bagels and might even be better the ones I grew up eating.
